Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On January 23, 2025, a female, Jane Doe, operated her Silver 2015 Volkswagen Jetta while working as a door dash driver. At approximately 6:20 p.m., Doe parked her vehicle outside of Rice Thai to obtain a to-go order.

The restaurant is located in the 1200 block of W. Kent Avenue. When Doe exited the store, she realized that her car was missing. The vehicle is estimated to have a value of $10,000 according to the Kelly Blue Book.  

At 10:11 p.m. the same evening, Doe located her vehicle at Caras Park. Doe called “911” for emergency police assistance. Responding Missoula Police Department officers located 33-year-old Jessica Munnell asleep in the vehicle.  

Officers immediately recognized Munnell as the same person who stole a vehicle the previous day. Officers determined that Munnell had been released from the Missoula County Detention Facility just 2 hours and 29 minutes before stealing Doe’s Jetta.  

Munnell was arrested and taken to the Missoula Police Department. Under Miranda, Munnell stated that she did not remember where she had found the stolen vehicle. She stated she was very tired. Munnell stated something to the effect she probably knew the vehicle did not belong to her.  

Munnell appeared to be fixated on the fact that she used the vehicle for something to sleep in. Munnell acknowledged that she was arrested for Theft of a vehicle the previous day. She stated something along the lines that she took the vehicle because she knew she was tired or sleepy.

According to court documents, she advised that she knew that it was illegal to take someone else’s vehicle without permission. At one point, Munnell stated something to the effect that her reason for stealing the vehicle was that she was really “fed up” and was having problems with life. 

Munnell is currently being charged with felony theft of property of a light vehicle. Her bond was set at $50,000.
