Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - Shortly after 3:50 a.m. on April 20, 2026, multiple officers from the Missoula Police Department were dispatched to the Poverello Center following a reported disturbance. The 911 caller reported that they could hear people fighting, but immediately hung up.

An officer arrived on scene and observed a male standing in the road. The man was identified as D.G. by a booking photo. D.G. told the officer that he was attacked by another male, later identified as 44-year-old Samuel Hubbard, who was seated nearby on a sidewalk.

While D.G. articulated who attacked him, he was unable to articulate how Hubbard attacked him. D.G. explained that he was hit on the right side of his face, but the officer did not observe any obvious injuries.

Another officer went inside the Poverello Center to review security camera footage of the incident. In the video, the officer observed Hubbard wearing the same clothing from when officers detained him. The video footage depicts Hubbard walking up to a blue tent that D.G. is in and kicking it several times before walking away. Hubbard then returns to the blue tent and again kicks it before walking away.

Hubbard then picks up what appears to be a stick or pole. The officer estimates that the stick was 2.5 - 3 feet long and 1.5 - 2 inches in diameter. Hubbard returns to D.G.’s tent and hits the tent with the stick before walking away. Hubbard again returns to the tent, this time bending over at the tent’s entrance and saying something to D.G. before yet again walking away.

D.G. then exits the tent, and Hubbard returns, raises the stick, and strikes D.G. with it three times. An officer spoke with Hubbard, who invoked his right to remain silent. While waiting, Hubbard made spontaneous statements about D.G., indicating that he had been acting out all night.
