Dangerous High-Speed Chase in Missoula Reaches 160 MPH
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On June 14, 2026, at approximately 7:15 p.m., a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper was parked in the median crossover on Interstate 90 near mile marker 78. While parked in the median crossover facing west, the trooper observed a dark colored Volkswagen hatchback driving east. The trooper turned his radar on and used the front opposite antenna function to check the Volkswagen’s speed at 95 MPH in the 80 MPH zone.
The trooper pulled out of the median and attempted to catch up to the Volkswagen. While accelerating, the trooper observed that the Volkswagen was gaining distance as it continued east. As the trooper continued east to mile marker 81, he notified dispatch that the vehicle was actively fleeing. At this time, the trooper was operating at approximately 150 MPH with lights and sirens on, and the Volkswagen was still pulling away.
The trooper maintained a visual on the Volkswagen ahead, and as it approached mile marker 84, he was able to positively check the Volkswagen’s speed at 152 MPH in the 80 MPH zone. Once in a straight section of highway, the trooper again checked the Volkswagen's speed at 160 MPH.

As the trooper continued pursuing the Volkswagen, it attempted to pass the group of vehicles on the left shoulder of the highway, which forced the slower-moving vehicles to be run off the road. As the pursuit approached mile marker 89 on I-90, the trooper observed the Volkswagen abruptly take the Frenchtown exit eastbound. The Volkswagen entered the off ramp and nearly ran a second vehicle off the road.
The Volkswagen blew the stop sign at the top of the off-ramp and turned right onto Demer St. The Volkswagen then drove south on Demer Street and then turned left on Mullan Rd. The Volkswagen then accelerated east, operating at well over 80 MPH in a 25 MPH zone. The Volkswagen continued east on Mullan Road at speeds well over 100 MPH in the 55 MPH zone.
As the trooper approached the intersection of U.S. Highway 10 and Robbins Road, the driver of the Volkswagen hit the brakes and slowed, but continued east at a lower speed. At this time, the trooper moved in to attempt a PIT maneuver, but as soon as contact was made, the driver hit the brakes and attempted to come to a stop. The Volkswagen spun slightly and came to a stop.
