Those of us who shovel our driveways by hand have sore backs today, after Old Man Winter dumped a pile of new snow through the weekend and into Monday.

There was so much snow that Missoula County Public Schools are all closed for a snow day today, according to an announcement released last evening.

Meteorologist Dan Zumpf with the National Weather Service office in Missoula provided the one-day snow total for the Missoula valley.

“Here in Missoula for the 25th, we received 8.6 inches of new snow. We’ll be updating that later this morning but we don’t expect more than just a few tenths of an inch more,” said Zumpf.  “So, 8.6 is probably the storm total for Missoula and we have 15 inches on the ground.”

Zumpf said there may be some light snow today, but the fury of the storm spent itself overnight.

“We may see some light snow this morning,” he said. “But not enough to lift the totals more than a few tenths of an inch. We still have some strong east winds out there, but they’re not gusting like they were last night. Whatever has been drifted overnight will make it very difficult to navigate, shovel and drive through.”

Lone Rock School also called off classes today.
