The city of Missoula is shining their lights on bike safety this week. The "lighten up" campaign in conjunction with the mayor's bike light initiative will focus on getting  more cyclists  to use lights at night. This week  city and campus police officers will increase their focus on riders *without* lights. Bicycle/Pedestrian Office Program Manager, Phil Smith says the law requires a minimum of a front headlight and a rear reflector so if you ride your bike at night … you need to wear a light.

(My interview with Smith is attached below)

The mayor's bike light initiative, now in its 6th year, puts close to 150  high-quality light sets in patrol cars, giving officers the option to issue a ticket for the violation, or  give out the lights to cyclists who need them to increase public safety.
