Montana wildlife officials are proposing to move about 150 Yellowstone National Park bison onto state or tribal lands as part of a long-stalled effort to establish new herds of the burly animals. Officials said Thursday the bison are disease-free and ready to move once the proposal is approved and fences are built. Montana Fish, Wildlife Parks is offering four potential relocation sites: the Fort Belknap and Fort Peck Indian reservations and two wildlife management areas, Spotted Dog near Avon and Marias River near Shelby. Worries that the bison could transmit the disease brucellosis to cattle prompted state lawmakers earlier this year to try to squash their relocation. That effort failed.Earlier efforts to place the bison on tribal land fell through. The state previously had not offered to take them.
