Missoula Woman Steals a Shopping Cart, Caught With Drugs
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On April 30, 2024, at approximately 5:08 PM, Missoula Police Department officers responded to a store in the 2900 block of Brooks Street regarding multiple reports of a disorderly female. One 911 caller stated that the suspect was yelling at random people and throwing things at them while pushing a shopping cart.
Another 911 caller said that the suspect had a pipe, was hitting vehicles with her body, and dancing around. The officers located the suspect at the intersection of South Ave. and Grant St. They identified her as 30-year-old Karrah Pickens and confirmed she was pushing a shopping cart.
After being advised of her rights, Pickens began making statements to law enforcement. While she was talking, the officer noticed clear signs of impairment. The officer said Pickens could not sit still, had involuntary muscle movements, exhibited bruxism in her jaw, and was looking around as if other people were watching her.
According to court documents, Pickens stated that she last used drugs the day prior and admitted to taking the shopping cart from Albertson’s. The officer knows that shopping cart theft is a significant issue for grocery stores and that full-sized shopping carts can cost up to $377. The shopping cart was ultimately returned to Albertson’s by a community service specialist.
Dispatch advised the officers that Pickens is on probation. Probation and Parole requested a search of Pickens and her property. An officer began by searching the shopping cart. Inside, he found a handcuff case containing plungers for hypodermic needles, alcohol prep pads, cotton balls, and a small, clear baggie containing methamphetamine.
