Expert Advice: How to Stay Safe Near Icy Rivers in Missoula
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - In the wake of the recent tragedy at Jacob’s Island Dog Park, the Missoula Fire Department would like to remind the public that winter river conditions present significant safety concerns. Administrative Support Charity Stubb provided the following statement.
“As seasoned professionals in water rescue scenarios, Missoula Fire Department firefighters recognize the unique challenges of icy environments during this time of the year,” Stubb said. “The frozen water adds a new layer of complexity, making it imperative for the public to exercise caution. Our firefighters train regularly to ensure we are able to respond to emergencies in these unpredictable environments.”
Stubb also sent out these safety reminders:
Stay Off Ice Surfaces: Members of the public are strongly urged to avoid venturing onto any ice surfaces, particularly those near rivers. The presence of moving water beneath the ice renders it extremely unstable and dangerous.
Animal Safety: Missoula firefighters have responded to distress calls involving animals stranded on ice or water. Pet owners are reminded to keep their animals on a leash near icy areas. In the event of an emergency, DO NOT attempt to rescue the animal yourself. Instead, promptly call 911 to ensure a safe and professional retrieval by trained first responders.
Stubb said they urge all residents to share this message with their families, friends, and neighbors to ensure that everyone is aware of the dangers posed by icy river environments.
“Prevention and awareness are key to avoiding further tragedies,” Stubb said. “The Missoula Fire Department is committed to safeguarding our Missoula community. Our thoughts are with the loved ones of Danit Ehrlich. Your adherence to safety guidelines plays a crucial role in preventing accidents and ensuring the well-being of all residents, including our furry friends!”
