
Missoula Fire Department Responds to Blazes at UM and a Motel
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - Within minutes of each other, Missoula City Fire Department crews responded to two separate fire calls on Monday, with multiple crews racing to blazes at the University of Montana and at a local motel.
According to a press release from the fire department, the first call came at 2:27 pm, when a fire at the Fairbridge Inn on Brooks Street sent 7 units and 15 firefighters to the blaze.

The report detailed the fact that a fire was discovered burning in a maintenance room on the first floor of the motel, and smoke had spread throughout the building.
Five persons were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, and there were no fatalities reported.

Damage to the property was estimated at $20,000, while the property saved was listed at $4 million.
The second call came in to Missoula City Fire just a few minutes later at 3:16 p.m. where a large fire was reported at the University of Montana Physical Plant where smoke was seen billowing out of the building.

The report stated that 20 firefighters were deployed initially, while another 10 were called in to assist later.
The Fire Department responded with three engines, two ladder trucks, a command truck and two City Fire Chiefs. The crews suppressed the fire with two separate hose lines.
Fire officials thanked the UM engineers on scene assisted by shutting off the gas and electrical power to the building.
Property damage to the UM Physical Plant was estimated at about $30,000, with the estimated property saved listed at $2 million.

That issue was repaired, and KGVO reported that spokesman Dave Kuntz stated “the administration has been working to bring the heating plant-forward with the latest technology.”

No injuries were reported during Monday’s fire at the UM Physical Plant.
