Montana's Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal from a teacher serving 10 years in prison in a notorious student rape case.

Friday's action ends the case of Stacey Dean Rambold almost a decade after he raped a 14-year-old freshman at Billings Senior School.

Rambold's public defender notified the high court last month that her client's appeal lacked merit. Rambold on Thursday asked justices to dismiss the case.

He initially was sentenced to just one month in prison by a state judge who suggested victim Cherice Moralez shared blame for her rape.

State District Judge G. Todd Baugh later retired after his handling of the case drew widespread outrage, and the state Supreme Court ordered Rambold resentenced.
