Missoula Man Points Gun at His Ex-Girlfriend and His Neighbor

On August 27, 2022, at around 9:00 pm, Missoula County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were dispatched to a disturbance at a residence in the 500 block of Iowa Avenue. It was reported that a male held a handgun at a victim’s head.  

Deputies arrived and located suspect Thomas McCormick and another male outside the residence. They were taken into custody. Thomas was placed in the back of a patrol vehicle and Mirandized. He agreed to speak to deputies. Thomas said he and the victim had been in a nearly 6-year relationship. They had broken up but continued to live together as roommates for the past two months.  

Thomas said he became angry at the victim and grabbed her hands and held them. She told Thomas she was going to tell other people that he grabbed her. Thomas told her that “if you tell anybody that, I’m gonna bury you six feet under” and that “no one is going to find out.” The victim was upset, which made Thomas really mad. Thomas had a handgun and pointed it against the victim’s head and said “do you just wanna die right now?” 

Thomas said he then went outside and told his friend, the other male that was taken into custody, that “Dude I almost killed [the victim], dude I’m not myself.” Thomas’ friend then came inside the home and told the victim to get out. Thomas reported that the victim swung at his friend and that the friend shoved the victim down the outdoor stairs. 

At this point, a neighbor arrived to help. Thomas said he got even more upset because he has a no trespassing sign in his yard. Thomas then grabbed his handgun again and pointed it at the neighbor. Thomas explained the gun was a Springfield 9 mm XD and that it was loaded but without a bullet in the chamber when he pointed it at the victim. However, when he pointed it at the neighbor he cocked it and had one in the chamber. 

The neighbor told a deputy that he and his friend ran over to the incident address and saw Thomas standing in the doorway throwing items at the victim while she was on the ground. He and his friend began walking the victim to his residence when Thomas returned to the doorway with a handgun. 

The neighbor said Thomas pointed the gun at the victim and then told him that this was private property and “get the f**k out of here unless you want to die today.” Thomas made other statements that he could shoot the neighbor if he wanted to. The neighbor said he heard Thomas manipulate the slide of the handgun as he was walking away.  

Thomas then put the barrel of the gun to the back of the neighbor’s head and said something to the effect of “I’ll put a bullet in the back of your head, and I won’t give a s**t about it.” Thomas then returned to his home, put the gun away, and chased the neighbor across the street. Thomas and the neighbor then got into a physical altercation in the street. Eventually, the neighbor, his friend, and the victim got inside the neighbor’s residence and locked the door. 

Deputies obtained a search warrant for Thomas’ home and located a loaded Springfield Armory XD 9 mm pistol and a .22 rifle. Thomas is currently being charged with two counts of felony assault with a weapon. On Monday, he made his initial appearance in Missoula Justice Court where his bail was set at $100,000.  

Thomas' friend was charged with misdemeanor assault.
