The Montana Marine Corps League is asking U.S. Rep. Steve Daines to clarify his use of their photo in a mailer he sent out.

Member James Borner says the group doesn't endorse candidates or parties and doesn't want the public to assume it supports Daines, who is running for U.S. Senate.

The Billings Gazette reports the mailer sent by Daines' U.S. House office is not campaign literature. It depicts the Republican offering his hand to league members, with a caption saying he was discussing veterans issues with them.

The league says the discussion never happened and wrote Daines' staff this week asking the congressman to clarify he didn't intend to exploit its members.

Daines spokeswoman Alee Lockman says Daines' staff has been in contact with league members to answer their questions.
