Officially, we still have some summer left here in Montana.

Unofficially? Fall is coming.

Embracing Fall: A Favorite Season in Montana

Fall is by far my favorite season of the four seasons we get here in Montana.

Crisp Nights and Fewer Crowds: The Magic of Shoulder Season

You get those crisp fall nights. The temperatures start to cool down. The summer crowds begin to disappear because we're entering that shoulder season. For a little while, it almost feels like we have Montana all to ourselves.

Of course, you do have to be a little more aware when you're out in the woods because hunting season gets underway.

But then there's the scenery.

The Beauty of Montana’s Fall Foliage

Fall foliage in Montana is absolutely beautiful.

We have plenty of evergreen trees, of course, but we also have plenty of aspens, cottonwoods, mountain maples and other trees that put on an incredible show when those leaves start changing colors.

And you may have already noticed it.

Even though we're still officially in summer, some trees are already starting to show those first hints of fall color.

Peak Foliage: When to Experience Montana’s Autumn Colors

Here in Montana, October is really when things start getting good.

We're looking at peak foliage beginning around the end of September and into early October, depending on where you are in the state and how the weather cooperates.

That's when you're going to want to get out and enjoy it.

Take a drive through Montana. Head into the mountains. Find a good trail. Take a Sunday drive.

Because once we get closer to Halloween and into November, a lot of those leaves are going to be gone.

The Transition to Winter: Don’t Miss Fall!

And then we're moving on to the next Montana season.

Winter.

So, officially, enjoy the rest of summer.

But if you're like me, you can already start getting excited because fall in Montana is right around the corner.
