Could Walmart’s Highest-Paying Jobs Be Coming To Montana?
When it comes to Walmart, most people's long-held impression of the company is that it is synonymous with low-wage retail jobs in the United States. This giant retail chain has long faced widespread criticism for the low pay of its frontline entry-level positions. I mean, how else can they afford to offer such low prices on their products if they are paying high wages? Right?
The New Pay Scale Is Raising Eyebrows
Recently, Walmart launched a new wage increase policy targeted at roles that require specialized skills. The pay range for its general maintenance technicians is set at $26 an hour and could even get as high as $51 per hour.

These positions are not entry-level retail roles like cashiers. They are core skilled positions responsible for managing store refrigeration systems, HVAC, electrical work, and the upkeep of facilities to keep stores operating normally.
Walmart's official policy goals are to invest in its employees, expand internal career opportunities, and cultivate a highly skilled workforce that matches the needs of its stores. Which means they have to bust out the checkbook and sharpen their pencils.

What Could This Mean For Montana?
Montanans know all too well that the cost of living has climbed much faster than most paychecks.
That's why this announcement caught my attention.
If these high-paying roles that do not require a four-year college degree are rolled out at Walmart stores in Montana, they could quickly become some of the most competitive retail positions in the state.

However, as of now, there is no clear indication that the policy will be implemented in Montana. It remains to be seen whether this pay scale will eventually become a common standard adopted across the retail industry or if it will remain limited to a relatively small number of specialized, skilled positions.
To be honest, who could have guessed that Walmart would ever be linked to an hourly wage of $51? That scenario definitely wasn't on my 2026 bingo card.
