Will Missoula County “Pause” Data Center Debate?

Missoula County is moving to potentially pump the brakes on the rapid development of data centers in the area.

County commissioners have announced they will hold a public hearing on Thursday, July 9, to consider enacting interim zoning regulations for data facilities.

     If approved, the measure would place a temporary pause on any new development or expansion of these centers.

A policy "time out" of sorts

Officials say the move is necessary to allow time to develop updated zoning rules that address potential impacts on natural resources. Data centers are known for high energy and water consumption, as well as noise and heat concerns that can affect surrounding environments.

Right now at least, the move would only impact one active proposal to open a center at the former Stimson Mill site in Bonner.

Krambu wants to start the operation in the facility that already drew community opposition when a bit coining mining business opened at the same location a few years ago.

Hundreds of objections

The company would get a jump-start by using the existing buildings and infrastructure.  But hundreds of residents have signed a petition, speaking about the data centers' big servers and their impact because of the power needed and the water to cool the equipment. 

Additionally, residents question whether the data center, or any large industrial use, is still compatible with Bonner's development as a place for homes and recreation.
