BUTTE, Mont. (AP) — Law enforcement officers are searching a wooded area north of Butte after two men found a pair of human legs several yards off a mountain road.

Butte Police Capt. Doug Conway said Wednesday they've begun a criminal investigation.

The Montana Standard reports the legs were found along Moulton Reservoir Road at about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. Police confirmed the legs appear to be from an adult white male.

The legs have been sent to the state crime lab in Missoula for analysis.

Butte detectives and members of a search and rescue team began searching the area Tuesday evening.

Officers plan to bring search dogs into the area to aid in the investigation.
