Montana Governor Steve Bullock pumped money into the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) on Wednesday in order to extend SNAP or food stamp benefits in Montana.

Bullock’s communication director Dave Parker said the cuts in food assistance happened due to changes in the Farm Bill that raised the threshold of energy assistance that a household must receive in order to receive additional SNAP benefits.

"Basically, the threshold for energy assistance in the Farm Bill was raised," Parker said. "If you don't meet that threshold, then you receive a cut in your SNAP benefits. So, what the governor did was increase the amount of energy assistance to approximately 2,200 households."

Governor Bullock’s office said the move is just common sense.

"The governor leveraged $24,000 in order for the state to receive $2 million," Parker said.

Bullock said that “Montana seniors and people with disabilities shouldn’t have to choose between feeding their families and paying for medication or other necessities.”
