Daines Reflects on Bush Funeral – Afghanistan – Reelection Bid
Montana Senator Steve Daines appeared on the KGVO radio Talk Back show on Thursday to discuss several topics, including his reaction to the funeral service of the late President George H.W. Bush on Wednesday and how his son, former President George W. Bush wept while giving his father’s eulogy.
“I can’t think of a more difficult task than for a son to eulogize a father who was so beloved by his family,” said Daines. “George H.W. Bush led with grace and with dignity. I thought it was very interesting when they laid out his life, from when he was shot down over the Pacific and wounded during World War II and survived, and yet some of the men that were with him perished, and how God has His hand on his life. Just another reminder of the blessings of God and how He leads certain men and women to lead at particular moments in time. I also remember when he was Ronald Reagan’s Vice President, and how he led with dignity and resolve.”
Daines also spoke of his recent visit with Montana troops serving in Afghanistan.
“It was a privilege to fly over to Kabul and spend some time at the Bagram Air Base,” he said. “To spend time with the 495th Montana National Guard Unit out of Kalispell, Montana and to be with those men and women on the ground, these are Bobcats and Grizzlies. At the office on the base you say Montana Grizzlies flags and Montana State Bobcat flags; these are all great Montanans and great Americans.”
Daines also responded to a news story that referenced his fellow Senator Jon Tester affirming that Governor Steve Bullock might be running for Daines’ seat in the U.S. Senate in 2020.
“You know, we are geared up and ready for the race in 2020,” he said. “We are ready for anyone who wants to run in 2020, we’ll be ready because this is a fight for our country’s future, and we’re in this fight for the long haul, and I’m looking forward to 2020.”
