The Smith River, like most other rivers in Montana, is currently flowing at very high levels. The State Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks is cautioning people with permits who float the Smith River over the next few weeks to prepare for cold water temperatures and extremely high flows. Spokesman for the F-W-P, Ron Aasheim says this is the time of year for increased water flows and with that safety is key.

Aasheim says high water is dangerous for all boaters so be prepared or do not go. On May 16th , a drift boat carrying a Washington state couple capsized on the Smith River, about 7 miles downstream from Camp Baker.  The 62-year-old man was able to swim to shore, but a 68-year-old woman  is still missing.
