State wildlife officials are trying to trap a bear that attacked a jogger and her dogs on U.S. Forest Service land in northwestern Montana.

Initial reports indicate the bear first attacked the woman's dogs and then went after her late Thursday morning north of Columbia Falls. The bear then left the area.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks investigator Brian Sommers says the woman suffered several bites and claw wounds. She was treated and released from the hospital in Whitefish.

Officials with the state wildlife agency were not sure if the animal that attacked the woman was a black bear or a grizzly bear.

The Forest Service closed the area. State efforts to trap the bear Thursday night were unsuccessful. A trap remains in place.

The incident is under investigation.
