State wildlife officials say a wolf pup was killed when it was struck by a car on U.S. Highway 93 about two miles south of Darby.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks Warden Lou Royce says the female pup was killed either late Sunday night or Monday morning.

Royce says that the wolf's mouth was filled with deer hide and hair. He says the wolf might have been eating road kill and was struck as it ran across the highway.

The death is the third wolf pup killed in the Bitterroot Valley in less than a week. Two other wolf pups were shot on a ranch northwest of Hamilton on Aug. 22 after they threatened a group of goats and sheep.
