A northwestern Montana man is dead after the motorcycle he was riding careened out of control and crashed on U.S. Highway 93 in Lolo.

Forty-nine-year-old Daniel Mason, from Stevensville, was killed around 9:45 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses saw a motorcycle speed up quickly in the southbound lane of the highway before it began wobbling and tipped over on its side.

Mason became separated from the motorcycle and slide about 500 feet before coming to a stop.

It's unclear if a truck driven by a 65-year-old man traveling in the other direction struck Mason.

Montana Highway Patrol officers are investigating.
