With 640 cases so far, Washington State is currently facing an epidemic of Pertussis, the disease commonly known as whooping cough. So far the case number is up over six times what it was last year. A few weeks ago, a case of the disease popped up in a Whitefish Middle school and many are concerned that the highly contagious disease could spread. Infectious disease nurse with the Missoula Health Department, Colleen Morris gives spoke with KGVO News about the disease and whether or not it has spread to Montana.

Whooping cough is especially harmful for the very old and very young. Luckily, a vaccine for the disease exists. Health officials advise young and old alike to make sure their vaccinations are up to date.
