Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - As the first anniversary of the attack on Israel by Hamas passes, conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate.

On Tuesday, University of Montana history professor Dr. Mehrdad Kia, told me he fully expects Israel to launch an attack directly on Iran, perhaps in a matter of days.

Kia said historically, Israel and Iran were once allies, but after the radical Islamic takeover in Iran took place, that relationship dramatically changed.

UM Professor Kia Anticipates a Direct Attack by Israel on Iran

“It's only after the 1979 revolution and the arrival of Khomeini and the Islamic Republic in Iran that has basically changed completely, and fundamentally changed the relationship between Israel and Iran,” began Kia. “With Iran supporting its proxies, Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the Houthis in Yemen.”

Kia told me that, according to his sources in Iran, that country is preparing for a possible attack by Israel.

Kia Said Iranian Airspace and Airports Were Closed In Case of Attack

“Israel has more or less defeated Hamas,” he said. “It has decapitated Hezbollah. Its leadership has been destroyed, and now the turn of Iran has come, and the Iranian government is very worried. Yesterday, Iranian airports and airspace were closed, and they were anticipating some kind of operation.”

Kia said if Israel does strike targets in Iran, specifically its oil industry, the price of oil could skyrocket, which could also have a devastating effect on the world economy and the approaching U.S. election.

“Anything Israel hits, especially if it includes, let's say, oil refineries, ports, and the Persian Gulf; any of those actions can cause a major crisis in the oil markets,” he said. “The price of oil would jump and of course, the Biden administration is frightened by the prospect of inflation in the market less than one month to the election.”

Kia did say that, in his view, should such an attack occur, neither Russia nor China would come to Iran’s aid.

Kia Said He Believes Neither Russia Nor China Would Come to Iran's Aid

“Neither Russia nor China want to see a nuclear Iran,” he said. “That is, they do not want Iran with weaponized nuclear capability, and do not consider Iran to be a strategic ally. Having nuclear power near the underbelly of Russia and China is pretty much unacceptable by Moscow and Beijing.”

Multiple news sources, such as the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Reuters, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Fox News, and ILTV Israel News state that a direct attack on Iran by Israel could be imminent.

Professor Kia appears monthly with UM Professor Emeritus Michael Mayer to host ‘Global Hot Spots’ on KGVO’s Talk Back show.
