Two ice fishermen were rescued after falling into the water at Holter Lake over the weekend. Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton says three men from Great Falls were fishing when two of them broke through the ice at about 4:30 p.m. Sunday near the Log Gulch Campground about 25 miles north of Helena.

The two men were able to get out of the water, but felt the ice was safer to the west. The third man returned to the east side of the reservoir to call for help. According to the Independent Record, members of Search and Rescue and the Wolf Creek Craig Volunteer Fire Department broke through the ice several times on their way to the men, who were able to walk back across with assistance. They were treated for hypothermia.

Dutton stated that a National Guard helicopter was on standby if the Search and Rescue mission had been unsuccessful.
