At around 3:00 on Tuesday afternoon, Gallatin County Search and Rescue were dispatched to the Ousel Falls Trail outside Big Sky. According to Captain Jason Jarrett, a 72-year-old woman fell while hiking the trail and she was unconscious.

“The rescuers, including the deputy that was on duty and the Big Sky Fire Department Medics, worked their way down the trail and ended up finding her near a rest area at the end of the trail,” Jarrett said. “When they got to her, she was conscious, but she was pretty cold and did not feel very well. We had the medics check her out and got her warmed up. We moved her back up to the trail head and she was met by the Big Sky Fire Department Ambulance.”

The woman was eventually transported to the Big Sky Medical Center. Jarrett says this type of incident is not uncommon.

“When people are out being active and doing the things that we appreciate people doing, some days bad things happen,” Jarrett said. “We are there to take care of you when a good day goes bad. It is not that she was doing anything wrong or anything else. She had people with her, but some days bad things happen to people that are out doing stuff we like them to do.”

Jarrett wants to remind everyone to be prepared and equipped for the extreme environment while recreating in the outdoors this winter.
