This Thursday and Friday, the two days before the general rifle hunting season have been set aside as the statewide youth deer hunt, according to Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks.

Education coordinator Vivaca Crowser says hunters 12 to 15 years of age who have completed hunter's safety education classes, and who are accompanied by a non-hunting adult, will be able to hunt deer as long as they obey the regulations in the districts they are hunting in.

Crowser says the general hunting season will begin at sunrise on October 20th and close at sunset on Sunday, November 25th. She says in western Montana, especially in the Bitterroot area, elk hunting is restricted in some districts due to low populations, but as hunters head east, game is more plentiful.

Crowser reminds hunters to always have your license and tags available for inspection, and to wear at least 400 square inches of hunter orange visible above the waist.
