More Details On Marine That Scuffled With Montana Senator
We've learned more about that former Marine who was involved in a struggle with Capitol Police and Senator Tim Sheehy on Wednesday during a hearing in Washington.
CBS News has identified the soldier as 44-year-old Brian McGinnis, a Green Party candidate running for Senate in North Carolina.
Cell phone video from the scene shows McGinnis shouting about the war in Iran, and then, as Capitol Police attempted to remove him from the room, Sheehy entered the fray. When the man's arm got caught in the door, Sheehy was seen urging the officers to ease off. There were initial reports that McGinnis' arm or hand may have been broken.
In a statement later on "X", Sheehy said he was trying to "help deescalate the situation", saying the "gentleman had come to Washington looking for a confrontation and got one", adding he hoped the soldier would get some help.
Candidates weighing on Daines' withdrawal
Reaction continues to be mixed over Senator Steve Daines' decision to drop out of the 2026 campaign.
Daines pulled his paperwork just minutes before the 5 pm deadline, and a few minutes over, federal prosecutor Kurt Alme filed for the race. That's leading some critics to blast Daines for cutting a "backroom" deal with GOP leaders to freeze out potential candidates.
His potential opponents were quick to react. Democrat Reilly Neill posted on social media, saying she still holds Daines accountable.
"Daine's dropping out of this race is another example of the Montana GOP being in complete disarray. The Montana Republican Party, they've done nothing but bend the knee to an administration that's hurt our farmers, our ranchers, and this is unacceptable." - Reilly Neill, U.S. Senate Candidate (D)
Independent Seth Bodnar also took a shot, criticizing the last-minute pull-out in a post on "X".
"Now they must think we're stupid, but we see this for what it is. A sleazy insider plot, led by party bosses in Washington, DC, to rob Montanans of their voice at the ballot box. And that's the problem." -Seth Bodnar, U.S. Senate Candidate (I)
However, Daines is getting a lot of support for the decision as well, with Governor Gianforte and other Republican leaders expressing their thanks for his service.
Could Daines have had this job?
In Washington, breaking news Thursday afternoon with President Trump announcing former North Dakota Governor Kristi Noem is out as Department of Homeland Security Secretary. And reports the job may have been offered to a Montana lawmaker.
In an online post, the President thanked Noem for her service, saying her departure date will be the end of March. She had faced sharp criticism during Congressional hearings this week.
Non Stop Local was reporting the White House had reached out to Daines about the job, but that he wasn't interested.
