A deer poaching in the north Bitterroot Valley left at least five mule deer dead and abandoned.

The incident happened on the MPG Ranch northeast of Florence, according to Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks warden Lou Royce.

The four bucks and one doe were shot and abandoned either in the late evening of Wednesday, May 30, or the early morning of June 1.

The game wardens are investigating and processing evidence at the scene. However, anyone with information is asked to call the 1-800-TIP-MONT line, which is 1-800-847-6668. Callers could receive a reward up to $1,000 for information leading to a conviction.

Established in 2009, the MPG ranch has set up numerous programs to preserve the natural habitat and focuses on research to restore and protect native diversity. They also lead educational tours and will be a location for a Bitterroot National Forest “Moonwalk” later this year.
