The strange, informative world of Reddit comes through again. A Redditor named u/The49thJudge took to the social media platform to ask "What's the most interesting fact you know about our great 4th largest state?"

There were some great responses involving Montanan entries into the Guinness Book of  World Records and Montana being a mind-blowingly massive state.

But this interesting fact may take the cake.

A Redditor by the name of u/OddJobDrummer brought their knowledge to the discussion saying...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Montana is the only state where a double proxy wedding is legal. That is, the bride can be in China, the groom can be in Jamaica, and two stand-ins can get married in their places.

I don't know if that makes sense, but it's a thing.

After some investigating, it appears to be true. A quick Wikipedia search shows there are four states - Texas, Colorado, Kansas and Montana - that allow proxy marriages at all. Out of those 4, Montana is the only state where a DOUBLE proxy marriage is legal.

What is a proxy marriage?

Proxy marriage is when you have someone stand in your place at a wedding. A double proxy marriage is when both parties are absent, so they each have a person stand in for them.

Why would somebody have a different person get married in their place? What's the point of having a wedding if you and your loved one aren't present? What's the reasoning? I have so many questions.

Reddit user u/kevinthomasmcs said "Yeah it's a holdover from days when men may be very far away for a very long time but small towns also needed to maintain their populations."

Makes sense to me.
