There were about 165 children every day seen in emergency rooms throughout the country last year after getting into prescription medications.

Coordinator of the Missoula Underage Substance Abuse Prevention Program team Brandy Tyree says in Montana, more than twice as many people died from prescription drugs than were killed by drunk drivers last year.

Tyree says prescription drugs are safe and useful when taken correctly. There will be a community discussion on protecting children from the misuse of prescription drugs, along with a drug take-back event on Tuesday, January 15th  at 7 pm on the 3rd floor of the University Center. Special speakers will include Missoula Police Department Detective Dean Chrestenson, Dr. Greg Kazemi, from the St. Patrick Hospital Emergency Room, and Kenzie Clarke, from The University of Montana School of Pharmacy.
