Montana vehicle owners are being given some new opportunities aimed at making it easier to take care of renewing their vehicle licenses and other steps for owning a car or truck.

Effective this month, the Montana Motor Vehicle Division can now complete vehicle transactions at some of its exam stations. This means Montanans can handle out-of-state transfers, title replacements, and registration renewals and replacements at their local MVD office while renewing or replacing their driver's license, all in one stop.

MVD Administrator Laurie Bakri says the change is being made in cooperation with the counties that want to participate.

System developed with counties' help

"So we had a couple of county representatives, one from Missoula and one from Jefferson County," Bakri explains. "So we took a large county and a small county and had them participate in the development."

Bakri says the counties that are participating already were excited about shortening their lines as well.

"And so if you go to the county, I think you should expect your lines to be shorter there as well. And so they're excited about the improvements that they have in their offices because now their customers are happy as well."

Switch will be rolled out gradually across the state

Similar to the changes with driver's licenses over the past few years, the rollout of the new services at the exam offices will be gradual. And counties will be involved in the change only if they choose to make the cooperative switch.
