Montana wildlife commissioners are scheduled to adopt a proposal Thursday that would allow hunters to kill 220 gray wolves this fall.

The proposal before the Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission comes after the state regained control over wolves this spring. Wolves were taken off the endangered species list in Montana, Idaho and portions of Utah, Washington and Oregon in an unprecedented move by Congress.

Montana hosted a more conservative hunt in 2009 in which 72 wolves were legally killed.

State wildlife officials say the increased quota will result in a 25 percent decline in the predator's population, from an estimated 566 animals last year to 425 if the hunt is successful.

A hunt is also planned in Idaho. Officials are still working out the details for their wolf season.
