Missoula Police Believe Missing Woman Drowned in the Clark Fork
Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On Friday, February 21, 2025, the Missoula Police Department asked for the public’s help finding 33-year-old Danit Ehrlich, who was reported missing near the University of Montana. According to Police Public Information Officer Whitney Bennett, Ehrlich was last known in the Jacobs Island dog park area near South Van Buren St. on Friday morning.
On Saturday morning, MPD said they were actively searching the area using drones in an effort to locate Ehrlich and her dog, Bamba. On Sunday, MPD reported that they believe Ehrlich drowned in the Clark Fork River.
“Through the course of our investigation, it has been determined that Danit has likely drowned in the Clark Fork River,” Bennett said. “Recovery efforts will continue as conditions allow, and we remain committed to bringing closure to her family. We also ask for the community’s help in locating Danit’s dog, Bamba, who is still missing."
The Missoula Police Department, alongside MCSO Search and Rescue (SAR) and the K9 Task Force, have conducted an extensive search of the area near the scene using drones and ground teams.
"At this time, we do not have any evidence to suggest that Bamba exited the river," Bennett said. "We are aware that individuals are forming search parties to look for Bamba along the river. While we deeply appreciate the care and concern for Bamba’s whereabouts, we are urging the public to avoid the river and surrounding areas due to dangerous conditions."
Bennett said the ice, swift currents, and unpredictable terrain pose significant risks, and they want to ensure that no further injuries or emergencies occur.
"Our priority is preserving life, and we strongly advise against anyone putting themselves in harm’s way," Bennett said. "If anyone locates Bamba, please contact the Missoula Police Department at (406) 552-6300 so we can reunite her with family members.”
Bennett said it is with deep sadness that they share the tragic news regarding the search for Ehrlich.
“Our hearts go out to her family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” Bennett said. “We extend our deepest condolences as they navigate this profound loss. We want to express our sincere gratitude to our community members who showed their support and assisted in the search. Your kindness and willingness to help have been truly appreciated.”
Bennett also wanted to extend thanks to all first responder agencies, The Missoula County Sheriff’s Office, their Search and Rescue Unit (SAR), and the K9 Task Force who were involved in the investigation and assisting agencies for their dedication and efforts throughout this process. Bennett asks that the family’s privacy be respected during this time.
