Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - Check your mailbox this week, as Missoula County will be mailing out your 2024 property tax bills.

I spoke with Missoula County Clerk and Treasurer Tyler Gernant on Tuesday for details on the property tax bills headed our way.

Property Tax Bills for 2024 Will be Mailed Out Soon

“Every year in October we send out property tax bills for real property and for what's called ‘centrally assessed’ property, and those bills get mailed in October,” began Gernant. “The due date is usually the end of November, but this year, because the end of November is a weekend, December 2 will be the due date for the first half of those property taxes. Similarly, the end of May is when the second half of those taxes is due. But again, because of because of a holiday and weekend, it is now actually going to be in June that the second half will be due.”

Gernant described just a few of the necessities our property taxes go to support.

Property Taxes Are Used to Pay for a Multitude of Government Services

“They go to support things like police and fire protection,” he said. “They fund most local roads, so roads and infrastructure, and then the other primary driver of them is local schools, and so those are, for the most part, broken down on your (property tax) bill.”

Gernant said there is a new program enabling some property taxpayers to make monthly installment payments.

“If you own your home and don't have any mortgage or escrow account, then this year, you so for most people, that means you don't have a loan on your home,” he said. “If it's your primary residence, then you can actually opt to pay those in seven equal monthly installments between the end of November, and basically in the end of May.”

Tyler Gernant Hopes the 2025 Legislature Will Help Ease the Property Tax Burden

Gernant, like all Missoula County taxpayers, is hoping that the upcoming 2025 Legislature will find ways to ease the property tax burden on Montanans.

“My hope is that they will do something that's a little more automatic and provide some residential property tax relief because the share of the share of residential property taxes has really gone through the roof in the last 20 years, and so there need to be some structural changes to make sure that residential folks are not paying an unfair share of the property tax burden,” he said.
