A U.S. Army parachutist was injured on Tuesday afternoon during a training exercise in Hamilton.

According to a news release from the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, 16 parachutists conducted a military free fall jump in Hamilton. One parachutist had an equipment malfunction and was forced to land in a residential area.

First responders provided immediate medical aid and the soldier is being observed and cared for at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula.

Members of the U.S. Army Special Operations have been conducting military free-fall training in the Bitterroot National Forest and in Ravalli County from August 31 through September 4.

Hamilton Police Chief Ryan Oster said his officers provided some assistance in response to the accident.

"One of the jumpers came down in a residential area and he was injured," Oster said. "We responded over there and assisted by blocking off some streets and assisted the EMS. The military came and put him on their chopper and flew him out."

The injured soldier's name, rank and hometown were not available.
