When to Watch the Northern Lights in Montana

After the recent lunar eclipse—which, if you caught it, was pretty incredible—we’ve now got another chance to see something just as memorable: the northern lights.

According to NOAA and the latest aurora forecasts, tonight and tomorrow night are shaping up to be solid opportunities thanks to incoming geomagnetic activity. In plain terms? Solar storms are sending energy our way, and that could light up the sky across parts of Montana.

Why the Aurora Could Be Strong This Week

Now, as always around here, there’s a catch—it all comes down to cloud cover. The good news is we’re looking at partly cloudy skies across much of the state, which means there should be at least some windows to catch a glimpse if everything lines up just right.

For the best shot, you’ll want to get away from city lights, look north, and give your eyes a little time to adjust. And if the aurora really gets going, you might not just see faint green—there’s potential for some vivid colors. 

Bottom line: don’t sleep on this one (unless you have to—trust me, I get it). If you’ve been waiting for another chance to see the northern lights in Montana, this could be it.
