Getting to Know Missoula’s Neighborhoods: The Northside

Every neighborhood in Missoula is unique and they all have characteristics that make up our community and our city. Getting to know the neighborhoods and learning about what makes them unique is something that everyone can learn about. Whether you are new to the area or have been here for years, you may not know a lot about the different areas that help make up Missoula.

In this series, we'll take a look at information from the City of Missoula's Neighborhood Profiles for each of Missoula's Neighborhoods, with all data cited below coming from the Neighborhood Profile. In this article, we'll look at the Northside Neighborhood.

Where is the Northside Neighborhood?

The Northside neighborhood is bordered to the south by railroad tracks and the north by the North Hills open space. There is a lot of open space that is considered part of the Northside neighborhood with 453 acres for hiking and biking. The Northside neighborhood also has a community garden and Head Start school.

Who Lives in the Northside Neighborhood?

The Northside neighborhood is a diverse neighborhood. There are a lot of renters in the Northside with 72% of the occupied households with renters compared to the city average of 53%. The median rent on the Northside at $931 is his higher than the median rent for Missoula at $895. The median home price in the Northside is much lower than Missoula's average. The median home price is $392,000 while the city median home price is $519,000. The median income at $47,418  in the Northside is also lower than the city median income of $54,820. The median age is also lower at 30.6 years old compared to the city's median age of 33.8 years old. A majority of the residents fall in the 25-34 year range.

Key Features of the Northside Neighborhood: Two Cemeteries

The Northside includes more than one cemetery, both the Missoula City Cemetery and the St. Mary's-Turner Cemetery. The Northside also includes Northside Community Gardens, the Moon Randolph Homestead, and two different parks the White Pine Park and the Northside Park.
