When I lived in a coastal town in Maine I made a comment one day about traffic being backed up on a draw bridge, and "Why couldn't they just reschedule the boats?" The Mainers laughed at me because, duh, the boats have to leave the harbor according to the tide. They can't be "scheduled." I blame my landlocked upbringing for an assumption like this. When you grow up in Montana, you don't have to worry about the tides.

So when I saw this photo on Facebook the other day, it made me do a double take because, well, it didn't look quite right. When I realized what it was and why it was there it made a lot more sense.

On first glance, I thought a gas station had sunk to the bottom of Flathead Lake.

Turns out, it's a boat-fill station.

The photo was posted in the Facebook group, "Vintage gas stations and vintage style pump girls" but one commenter said it may have been originally shared on the MONTANA-tude! Facebook page.

A history of the sign was provided by the many people who commented on the Facebook post. One person explained, "The sign was on the point but the fuel station was on the east side of the point. There was also a fuel station over at Kings point. Sat back in the bay."

Others shared memories, like "getting gas there in my grandfather's boat" and other shared memories of breakfast at the lodge.

Do you have memories of using this fill station at Flathead lake?
