The city of Idaho Falls is another step closer to allowing the practice of beekeeping inside city limits.

This week, the city council approved on first reading an ordinance that would let residents keep honeybees.

Proponents say the city's rule banning bees is outdated and fails to consider the various benefits to healthy bee populations.

Resident Janeil Kunz has spearheaded the ordinance change, arguing more liberal policies not only benefits would-be beekeepers hoping to produce their own honey but gardeners all across town that gain from bees pollination skills.

The council must approve the ordinance one more time before the changes go into effect.
