Several sporting events have been cancelled due to wildfire smoke over the past few weeks, mostly in the Bitterroot Valley, but also in Missoula.

Public relations director with Missoula School District One, Leslie Brasfield,  says school officials work together with the Missoula City County Health Department and determine whether or not the air quality in the area is of sufficient quality for students to play or practice outdoors.

Air quality in Missoula has been hovering between Moderate and Unhealthy since the Sawtooth Fire rapidly expanded last week. On Tuesday, two soccer matches between Missoula Sentinel and Missoula Big Sky were cancelled because of smoky conditions. Brasfield says the matches will be rescheduled when conditions improve.

The Sawtooth Fire was only 45% contained as on Tuesday morning.
