Glacier National Park experienced a major tourism boom this August, drawing 828,071 recreation visitors, a 15.2% jump compared to the 718,766 recorded during the same month last year.

That's helping to offset an early season slump, where the pace of visits was off a typical summer pace.

According to preliminary visitor statistics for Glacier National Park, year-to-date visitation for the iconic Northwest Montana destination has surpassed 2.65 million travelers, reflecting a steady 10.2% overall increase for 2026.

Many Glacier's return is helping

The most dramatic surge occurred in Many Glacier, where monthly visitation skyrocketed by 227.9% to 106,736 people, up from 32,549 in August 2025. Last year, construction activities had limited access. Now, year-to-date visits in that northeastern valley have more than doubled to 293,202.

The Saint Mary entrance also posted strong gains, welcoming 217,937 travelers, a 25.5% increase over the previous year.

Meanwhile, the West Entrance remained the park's busiest portal, handling 379,733 visitors, a 4.6% increase. In contrast, several southern and western sectors recorded sharp declines. Two Medicine dropped 22.8% to 46,307 visitors, Camas fell 26.3% to 20,352, and Walton/Goat Lick on the north decreased 18.2% to 21,571, reflecting the reported drops in Canadian visitors.

How are visitors staying in the park this year?

Overnight stays pointed toward shifting lodging preferences among travelers. Total overnights edged up 1.2% to 108,873, buoyed by a 19.3% increase in concession lodging stays to 35,027.

But not as many people are camping in 2026.

🏕️ The July stats show tent overnights fell 7.5% to 31,403, RV stays declined 4.1% to 28,371, and backcountry stays dropped 9.4% to 11,221.

Transportation trends will take further analysis

It's hard to draw any conclusions yet from the travel patterns this summer, especially given the return to a no-reservation system on Going-to-the-Sun Road and limited parking times at Logan Pass.

While West Entrance concession bus passenger traffic plummeted by 86.6%, passenger counts originating from Saint Mary surged by 96.9% to 9,281 riders.

Likely short of a record

Overall visits are up through August, but last year's mark was only 2.4 million visitors. There have been 2.8 million people come through the Glacier gates through the end of summer, and depending on how weather closures impact the September numbers, the park could finish with a total close to 2022 and 2023. 3.2 million people visited the park in 2024, with 3.1 million last year.

📈 The record remains 2017, when 3.3 million people visited Glacier.
