Montana Senator Steve Daines is as conservative as they come, but he does reach across the aisle when the issue is important, such as his effort to stop members of Congress from owning or trading stock.

Daines called in to the KGVO Newsmakers Line on Wednesday to discuss a number of issues, including a bill to prohibit members of Congress to own or trade stocks.

“This is a step to help restore faith,” began Senator Daines. “And by the way, voters across both party lines overwhelmingly support a ban on members of Congress trading stocks. I saw a Fox (News) poll in the last two weeks that said 70 percent of Americans want to see this done. This is a bit unique here. You know, this is a bipartisan effort. You have a Republican Steve Daines, from Montana working with a Democrat Elizabeth Warren, from Massachusetts.  Let me tell you, Elizabeth Warren, and I disagree on just about everything, but we do agree that this is something we should do.”

Inflation often begins with energy prices, and Daines laid the blame on the rapid rise of inflation at the door of the Oval Office in Washington, D.C.

“He's putting people in places in the administration that want to shut down Made in America energy, and they're not even being quiet or subtle about it. They are overtly trying to shut down Made in America oil, natural gas and coal, and that drives the United States and other countries into the hands of OPEC and Russia. It also strengthens the Russia- China ties. It's a very dangerous position affecting not only economic security and rising prices, but also national security and geopolitics.”

Daines also referenced the current mandates affecting Montana Head Start workers.

“This vaccine and mask mandate from the Montana Head Start staff must go. This mandate is threatening access to child care and is disrupting children's education. I've introduced an official resolution of disapproval against these mandates. We're going to keep up the fight against them. You know, at the end of the day when we step back and do a critique of what happened during COVID, the bottom line is this. The government response is an overreach on COVID that I believe will have far greater and more severe lasting negative consequences than the pandemic itself.”

Senator Daines met with all three Missoula County Commissioners just after he appeared on the Montana Morning News.
