A man previously convicted of murder, 48 year-old Frank Belmarez, appeared in Missoula Justice Court charged with two felonies, assault with a weapon, and partner or family member assault.

Court records indicate that Belmarez threatened his girlfriend and her son with a folding knife at a residence on Kensington on Saturday, June 6. The victims, knowing Belmarez had already been convicted of deliberate homicide, were sure Belmarez would carry out his threat to kill them both given the opportunity.

Deputy Missoula County Attorney Selene Koepke asked Judge Karen Orzech for a high bail.

"County Attorney Kirsten Pabst will be handling this case, and she requests $200,000 for bail," Koepke said. "That will be $100,000 for each count of assault with a weapon. The defendant here was convicted of mitigated deliberate homicide for stabbing his last wife, and discharged his prison sentence in 2011. In this case your honor, the defendant threatened to kill both victims and the state believes that this is a grave community safety risk. If the defendant should be released we ask for no contact with the victims."

Judge Orzech remanded Belmarez back to the Missoula County Jail on $200,000 bond.
