On October 6,1986, Congress amended the National Trails System Act of 1968 to include the 1,170 mile Nez Perce National Historic Trail. During the next year, managers along the Nez Perce trail will host a number of workshops, and ask for public input on a variety of topics related to the administration of the trail. The Custer and Gallatin National Forests' Roger Peterson explains the history of the trail.

The trail was also a prehistoric travel corridor for a number of tribes traveling from the Pacific Northwest to the buffalo hunting grounds on the Great Plains.
