The U.S. began "intense" operations in Syria against the terror group ISIS early Tuesday, sending bombers, fighters, and Tomahawk missiles into ISIS-dominated territory in the northern part of the country.

Several other Arab nations are also bombing targets inside Syria, according to U.S. military officials quoted by CNN, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan.

Sources  didn't name specific targets, though the strikes are reported to have taken place in the city of Raqqa, in northern Syria.

The U.S. has previously resisted military strikes inside Syria during the ongoing civil war there, but recent attacks by ISIS, including the beheadings of two American journalists, have prompted more direct action. In a recent speech, President Obama declared: "I have made it clear that we will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country, wherever they are. That means I will not hesitate to take action against ISIL in Syria, as well as Iraq."

CNN reports that the President was intensively briefed on targets before the strikes.
