University of Montana officials have confirmed the pedestrian struck and killed by a semitrailer early Friday was a UM student.

Vice President for Integrated Communication Peggy Kuhr identified the victim as Jake Kallen, a junior.

According to the Montana Highway Patrol, the semitrailer was westbound on Interstate 90 near Missoula when the accident occurred at around 3 a.m. Friday.

Authorities say they do not know why Kallen was on the highway. The truck driver was not injured.

Kuhr said UM administrators have been in contact with Kallen's family.

She says councilors at UM's Curry Health Center are available for students who need of support.
