Two people were badly injured in a two-vehicle head-on collision Wednesday afternoon on Highway 200 near the I-90 interchange.

Montana Highway Patrol dispatch said a female, 22,  driving a 2002 VW Jetta crashed into a 1988 Ford F-150 pickup at a high rate of speed.

"The driver of the Jetta was taken to Missoula's St. Patrick Hospital, and is in critical condition," the dispatcher said. "The driver of the pickup truck was injured so severely that he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington." Another source said the male driver of the pickup truck nearly lost a foot in the accident.

The MHP dispatcher said several factors led to the serious nature of the injuries.

"Neither driver was wearing a seat belt," the dispatcher said. "Alcohol is possibly a factor, and excessive speed was definitely a factor in the crash."
