A Near Head-on Collision on Highway 10 in Missoula

Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - During the early morning hours of August 26, 2026, a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper was dispatched to the Town Pump parking lot at the Wye in Missoula County. A Montana Division of Criminal Investigation Agent reported that he was traveling eastbound on Highway 10 West when he observed a vehicle traveling westbound at a high rate of speed. The suspect vehicle crossed into the agent’s lane of travel and nearly caused a head-on collision.  

The agent swerved to avoid the collision while the suspect vehicle passed him on the passenger side of the agent’s vehicle before nearly striking a guardrail and leaving the roadway. The agent reported the driver got back on the roadway and continued driving erratically. The agent followed the suspect vehicle to the Town Pump parking lot. 

The trooper is aware the speed limit where this occurred on Highway 10 West is 55 miles per hour, and a head-on collision would easily create a substantial risk of serious bodily injury or death. The trooper arrived at the Wye and spoke with a Missoula County Sheriff’s Office Deputy who was already on scene. The trooper then contacted the driver of the suspect vehicle, identified as 43-year-old Lucas One Horn.

While speaking with One Horn, the trooper detected the odor of alcohol on One Horn’s breath. The deputy also observed multiple small plastic baggies on One Horn’s person containing a substance inside and/or residue, consistent with the packaging of illegal drugs.  

The trooper had One Horn perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. One Horn indicated 4/6 clues of impairment on the HGN, 4/8 clues of impairment on the Walk and Turn test, and 2/4 clues of impairment on the One Leg Stand test. One Horn provided a preliminary breath test sample, which was a 0.082 BrAC. One Horn was then read the Implied Consent advisory, but refused to provide a blood sample. Then One Horn was arrested. 

The trooper applied for and was granted a search warrant for One Horn’s blood. One Horn was transported to a hospital where a blood draw was conducted. Then One Horn was transported to the Missoula County Detention Facility. While at the jail, jail staff located a small plastic baggie containing methamphetamine.

One Horn is currently being charged with felony criminal possession of dangerous drugs, felony criminal endangerment, and DUI first offense. His bond was set at $25,000.
