1921 — Babe Ruth was arrested in New York for speeding, fined $100 and held in jail until 4 p.m., yet he still played for the New York Yankees that evening. (More info.)
1935 — Jockey Willie Saunders rode Omaha to the Triple Crown with a victory at the Belmont Stakes. (More info.)
1955 — The Brooklyn Dodgers optioned future Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda to make room on their roster for future Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax. (More info.)
1966 — The NFL and AFL announced plans to merger by 1970. The leagues also agreed to begin playing the AFL-NFL World Championship Game, later known as the Super Bowl. (More info.)
1969 — The New York Yankees hosted Mickey Mantle Day, when the team retired the No. 7 jersey of the future Hall of Fame slugger. (More info.)
1982 — The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Philadelphia 76ers, four games to tow, to win the NBA Championship. (More info.)
1986 — The Boston Celtics beat the Houston Rockets in the sixth game of the series to win the NBA Championship. (More info.)
1991 — Former New York Jets defensive lineman Mark Gastineau won his first pro boxing fight by knocking out Derrick Dukes in 12 seconds. (More info.)
1992 — Pitcher Steve Howe, then of the New York Yankees, was banned from Major League Baseball for a seventh time because of drug use. Howe was the first to be banned for life because of drugs, but he was later reinstated. (More info.)
